The Power of Sound - Reprogramme your nervous system with Sound Therapy.

Written by Edwin Curbishley

What I find makes sound healing so effective is its gentle simplicity. Though the effects can still be deep, complex and profound.

The all important part of sound therapy is that it is experiential, for both the practitioner and client. In my view, this is a therapeutic model based on divine vibration without the necessity for language as a way of communication.

Sometimes words can get in the way of the therapeutic process, which makes working with sound so effective. When we begin to formulate a word or a thought, it begins as a complex process of chemical and electrical connections that communicate with each other at a cellular level in our neurology. This connection generates either positive or negative feelings. Sound vibration has the potential to re-program negative feelings by activating the parasympathetic nervous system – in turn aiding relaxation, feelings of peace and tranquility.

We see the process of connection repeated in the formation of our physical bodies. The heart forms much before the brain. The process begins with the egg and sperm joining together, then the process of cell replication begins. Within a very short time of embryonic development the cells begin to differentiate and a tiny heart is formed. This early formation of the heart is, in my view, what allows us as new beings to be guided by the rhythm of spirit. It is from the heart that feelings are born, flowing through into each cell. The brain, said to be the provider of thoughts, develops much later than the heart. They remain separate in their rhythms until nearer the time of birth when the central nervous system takes over. From this point on, the heart is reliant on the brain. Feelings combine with thoughts and the two become virtually indistinguishable.

When working with an instrument such as the frame drum, it is evident to me how a simple heart beat rhythm appears to awaken an eternal memory in our collective souls. It is almost impossible to ignore and has deep cellular effects. It’s as if we are programmed to receive vibration – which of course we are!

When we feel something really deeply both physically and in our souls, the ability to communicate in words can become difficult. Therefore it should not be surprising that confusion arises. This can manifest as stress and anxiety, especially when the physical world becomes dominant leaving little room in our daily lives for the spiritual realms. This can happen in particular, when we ignore our feelings or unexpressed subtle energies.

The healing space that Sound Therapists can provide is so important, and never more required than now, to be held in divine vibration with the intention of healing, is truly  beyond words. Allowing the space, time and silence for the healing process is a truly amazing experience.
